Hospice Ball is Saturday

Fort Dodge is fortunate to have health care resources that are the envy of other communities – including many much larger towns.

Scientists and medical professionals have made huge strides in understanding how prudent lifestyle and screening decisions can head off health problems. Even so, during the course of a lifetime, most people will require medical attention. The good news is that the ability of health care providers to address successfully those situations is improving rapidly and is far more advanced than was the case even a few years ago.

Local residents, and those of nearby counties, are fortunate that Trinity Regional Medical Center and the other components of Trinity Health Systems are exceptionally state-of-the-art examples of the best that 21st-century health care has to offer.

Despite the availability of outstanding health care, all lives have a common endpoint – death. Since 1983, the team at Trinity Hospice has helped patients and families plan for the final stages of a terminal illness.

Making it possible for people to die with dignity in a surrounding that is comfortable for them, their family and friends is the goal. The hospice team helps patients stay in their homes if that is their preference and it is feasible given the availability of caregiver support from family members and friends.

Trinity has hospital inpatient hospice beds, but they aren’t an ideal arrangement for patients who can’t remain at home. That’s why the medical center’s capabilities also include the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, located on Trinity’s Highland Park campus. This is a facility where terminally ill patients can end life in a homelike setting.

It’s important to keep Trinity Hospice strong. That’s why The Messenger urges readers to support the Hospice Ball. This fundraising event will be held Saturday at the Best Western Starlite Village Inn and Suites. In addition to a social hour, dinner and dancing there will be raffles and a silent auction. The co-chairs for this year’s ball are Tim and Susan Doyle and Mike and Jean Doyle.
