MARY L. AVELLEYRA

Mary L. Avelleyra, 93, of Fort Dodge passed away Sunday, February 17, 2019 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home.

A time of family gathering and prayer will be 10:00 am Monday, February 25, 2019 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and then at 10:30 a Mass of Christian Burial will be at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery. A visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the funeral home with a Catholic Daughter’s Rosary beginning at 3:00 pm.

Mary is survived by her brother, Al Avelleyra of Lansing, MI and sister, Dolores Murphy of Lakewood, CO; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Augustin and Maria (Villegas) Avelleyra; brothers, Aurelio and Augie Avelleyra; and sister, Teresa Williams.

Mary Lorenza Avelleyra was born June 4, 1925 in Clayworks, IA. She attended schools in Fort Dodge and lived her entire life in Fort Dodge. She was the Branch Manager for the Pacific Intermountain Express and retired in 1984 after working there for 34 years. She was a member of Corpus Christi Church where she served as a church director for 5 years. She was a long-time member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Legion of Mary. She was an Auxiliary Board Member of the Marian Home as well as the Resident Advocate Committee Chair. Mary also known to her family and friends as “Lenchie” played a very active role in the parish Hispanic Ministry and was a member of the “Just for Fun” Band. Mary was a very passionate caregiver. Her four loves were “Faith, Family, Hispanic Ministry, and Music”. In 2010 she was awarded the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame Govenor’s Award for her time assisting Hispanic families. She also received the Holy Trinity Parish Lumen Christi Award. There are many cherished memories spent with nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.
