WALTER G. MARTIN
RENWICK — Walter G. Martin was born June 20 1930, to Bert Clair and Pearl (Trask) Martin of Renwick. Walter attended Renwick High School and graduated valedictorian of his high school class in 1947. He then entered Iowa State University and was a member of the ROTC program which he graduated from in 1951. He met his wife Betty while attending JC and Marion Buchanan’s wedding in Nashville, TN.
They were married on October 5 1952, at Park Ave Baptist Church Nashville, Tennessee. After their wedding, they drove up the Alcan Highway, together in a 1948 Kaiser where Walter was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska during the Korean conflict.
He was proud of his service in the military and after the war in 1954, Betty and Walter moved back to Renwick where they started farming with Walters parents. He continued on in the Air Force Reserve where he retired a Colonel from the Mason City 174th refueling squadron.
Walter and Betty had two sons Dennis born (’56) and Tom (’58). In his farming career; he claimed to have had the first self-propelled combine in Wright County. He also had the first 12-row planter in Wright County. He liked to brag about how the self-propelled combine was much better than the threshing machine he grew up helping his father and sister operate.
Walter loved trap shooting at Izaak Walton, he loved to bird hunt and coon hunt. He would spend hours loading his own shotgun shells and he also loaded brass ammo for his collection of rifles and pistols.
He attended most all of Dennis and Tom’s high school activities and as a family they enjoy horse shows, riding Shetland ponies and trips to the cabin in Minnesota. Where they went water skiing and snowmobiling. Walter was active in the United Methodist Church, Viola Lodge, Masonic Lodge 538, Commander at the American Legion and various other groups. Walter’s most recent involvement was with the Renwick Hardy Veterans Memorial Foundation.In 2011 Betty and Walter moved to The Meadows in Clarion.
Walter died on Friday, July 6, 2018, at the Iowa Specialty Hospital, Clarion, at the age of 88.
He is survived by his sons, Dennis (Diane Reed) Martin and Tom (Candice) Martin; grandchildren, Jessica (John) McCulley, Derek Palmertree, Jacob (Jenna) Martin, Michael Martin, Benjamin Martin, Lindsey Williams, Haley Martin, and Elizabeth Martin; great-grandchildren, Eric McCulley, Alex McCulley, and Conner Martin; sister, Margaret Lubbert; brother-in-law James Murray Anderson wife Bobbie, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Betty; parents, Bert and Pearl Martin; sisters, Lois Nelson and Marion Buchanan.
Funeral services for Walter will be held at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at the United Methodist Church, Renwick. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, July 9, 2018, the United Methodist Church, Renwick with Masonic Rites at 7:00 PM. Burial for Walter and Betty will be following the service in Elmwood Cemetery with Military Honors conducted. Online condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
