RICHARD SCHMIDT

WEBSTER CITY — Richard Howard Schmidt, the son of Herman and Rilla (Arthur) Schmidt, was born on April 3, 1926, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Fort Dodge High School “Class of 1944.”

Richard was very proud of his service in the United States Navy from April of 1944 until his honorable discharge in June of 1946, during WWII. He appreciated that he was able to participate in the 2010 Honor Flight.

Richard returned home to Fort Dodge, where he attended AIB in Fort Dodge and studied accounting.

Richard was married to Melba Matthews from 1947 to 1971 and to this union, there were two children: David and Gail. The couple moved to Minnesota for a few years and returned to Woolstock where he began farming. Richard started working for Webster City Products in 1956 and initially worked part-time and then retired from farming and worked full time until his retirement in 1991. He then mowed for the city of Webster City for many years.

In 1975, Richard married Marjorie Hill and they made their home in Webster City. She preceded him in death in 2005.

Richard was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, wood carving, traveling, camping, reading, gardening and working in his yard.

Richard passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, at the age of 91 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Bernard Schmidt and son-in-law, Ferril Harrison.

Survivors include his children: David Schmidt and wife Mary of Woolstock and Gail Harrison of Bristol, TN; four grandchildren: Heather Campbell, Rusty Harrison, Brad Schmidt and wife Shawna and Ryan Schmidt and wife Chelshe; nine great-grandchildren: Alesha, Nolan, Grace, Emmett, Elliott, Everlee, Seth, Hannah and Jacob; two great- great-grandchildren: Alana and Zen; sister-in-law, Doris Schmidt of Fort Dodge and nephews and nieces: Steve Schmidt, Chris Schmidt, Kelly Schmidt McClain, Randy Schmidt and Peggy Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Webster City with Pastor Mike Kroona officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial in Oakland Cemetery, Fort Dodge.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
