JANICE M. BIRKLAND

SOMERS — Janice M. Birkland 80, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Trinity Regional Medical Center, Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at New Covenant Christian Church, 3318 5th Ave. South, Fort Dodge, with Pastor Michael Carmody officiating. Burial will be Cedar Township Cemetery, Rinard, at a later date. Visitation and viewing will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 16 at the New Covenant Christian Church Fort Dodge. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is in charge of arrangements.

Janice is survived by her husband Andy; daughters, Dianna Birkland of Spring, TX, and Andrea Birkland of Austin, TX; sister Joyce (Gordon) Erritt; brothers, Denny (Judy) McKenney, and Kenny (Kelley) McKenney; sister-in-law Juanita Borland; brother-in-law Beryl (Marilyn) Birkland; several nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Myrl and Virginia (Good) McKenney; infant brother Duane McKenney; and brother-in-law Frank Borland.

Janice Marie McKenney Birkland was born December 21, 1936 at Logan, Iowa, and graduated from Somers High School, with the Class of 1955. She also graduated from Capital City Commerical College in Des Moines with a secretarial degree. Janice was employed with a trucking company while living in Des Moines, before returning to Somers and working at Glaser Meats in Fort Dodge. While employed at the State Bank in Fort Dodge, she met her husband Andy. They were united in marriage on October 13, 1962 at Somers. Janice worked a variety of jobs in the Somers and Fort Dodge areas including Cedar Valley Community School and Community Christian School. Janice was a member of New Covenant Christian Churchand United Methodist Women in Somers. Janice enjoyed photography, scrapbooking, attending family sporting and Church activities, mission trips to New York City, China, and Freedom Restoration Ministries. Following the couple’s retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Texas to visit their daughters.
