Lorna Lee Albaugh, 87, peacefully went to be with the Lord on April 28, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services to celebrate Lorna’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny with her private burial at Brethren Cemetery near Elkhart. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2017, at the church.

Lorna Lee Markert was born July 16, 1929, to Walter and Ella (Strutzenberg) Markert at home on the “Old Quade Farm”. She grew up and received her education from Manson High School, graduating in the class of 1947. Lorna continued her education, earning her teaching certificate from Buena Vista College, and taught in a one room school house in rural Manson, Iowa.

On January 23, 1948, Lorna was united in marriage to Dean Floyd Albaugh; the couple was blessed with four children, Mickey, Dennis, Sheryl and Roland. They farmed near Rockwell City and Somers, Iowa before moving to rural Elkhart and Ankeny. Lorna was proud to help Dean with the day to day operations and always enjoyed driving the tractors. In retirement, Lorna worked at Younkers Warehouse and then Walmart. Later she wintered in Mesa, Arizona. Everyone knew her and she never forgot anyone’s name.

Lorna was a great cook and was admired for her beautiful and delicious pies and her renowned potato salad. She loved having her family and friends around her kitchen table.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and was very active with the Merry Makers, Town and Country, 10th Street Gang, Albaugh Farms bowling team, and numerous card clubs. Most of all, Lorna cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who she was very proud of and loved.

Lorna will be deeply missed by her children, Mick (Sandy) Albaugh, Dennis (Susan) Albaugh, Sheryl (Jim) Weston; brother, Joel (Nancy) Markert; eight grandchildren; twenty one great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; infant son, Roland Albaugh; parents, Walter and Ella Markert; parents-in-law, Floyd and Nina Albaugh; and sisters, Fritzi Marsh and LuAnn Kammarmeyer.

Lorna’s family would like to thank all her friends and caregivers at Vintage Hills, Mill-Pond, and The Bridges for all the care she was given. And special thanks to the wonderful people at Suncrest Hospice and Home Instead who took such loving care of her in her last days.

Memorial contributions can be directed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. Online condolences and memories of Lorna may be shared with her family at www. AnkenyFuneral Home.com.

Lorna has been the matriarch of her family, and always treasured bringing her family together to host a meal. Her delicious desserts, pies and best potato salad were frequently requested by her family.
