POCAHONTAS — Roland D. Rittgers passed away on January 21, 2017, in Pocahontas, Iowa at the age of 90 years. He was born on a farm near Plover, Iowa to Ernest and Leila (Gilleland) Rittgers on December 26, 1926. He graduated from Havelock High School and then served in the U.S. Army during WW II, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant.

In 1946, Roland married Mary B. Marcum of Humboldt, Iowa in the Humboldt Congregational Church. He attended college at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, on the GI Bill. Roland and Mary farmed for many years near Havelock, Iowa and raised their three children on the farm.

Roland was a Cub Scout Pack Leader, served on the Havelock School Board, the Pocahontas County Zoning Board, and was a life member of the Havelock AmVets. He and his wife retired to a house in Pocahontas and spent many winters of fun in the Arizona sun. Roland enjoyed his hobby of old cars and fixing old tractors. He also loved history and traveling.

Survivors include his daughter Roxana and her husband, Eugene Kerns of Bailey, CO; son George E. Rittgers and his wife Diane of Bartlesville, OK; son Bryan Rittgers and his wife Wanda of Havelock; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and many dear friends.

His loving wife of 70 years, Mary, passed away seven weeks before he did. His only sibling, Wanda Iverson, passed away a few years ago.

Roland will be greatly missed by his loving family who will always remember him as a strong, determined, creative, hard working man.

It was Roland’s wish to be cremated, to not have a funeral, and to instead have a celebration of his and Mary’s lives in July for his family. In lieu of flowers, the children request that memorials be given to Congregate Meals at the Hinde Community Center in Pocahontas where Roland enjoyed socializing and eating meals with friends.
