AVON PARK, Fla. – Betty Faye “Tommy” Akselsen, 82. of Avon Park, Fla., died April 5, 2013 at Central Rehab in Brandon, Florida. She was born July 18, 1930 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Gertrude and Jack Payne. She married Elmer Akselsen on October 30, 1948. They were married for 50 years, until his death in 1998. Surviving are her brother Dan (Kay) Payne and sister Patricia Blunt, both of Fort Dodge, Iowa; two daughters, Kathleen (Robert) Border of Avon Park and Kyra Mesich, PsyD of St. Paul, Minnesota; one son, Kent Akselsen of Valrico, Florida; three grandchildren, Robert (Kathleen) Border, II, Sheryl (Nick) McGrath, and Cecelia Mesich; four great-grandchildren, Aidan and Bobby Border, Luke and Nicole McGrath. Betty’s sister, Lois Ainslie, preceded her in death. Betty graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1948. She moved to Avon Park in 1965 and remained there for 48 years. Betty was an entrepreneur with many talents. She was an expert seamstress, sold Avon, decorated cakes, made floral arrangements and was secretary for the Avon Park Cemetery Association for more than 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, a variety of crafts and many games including bingo.
