Asbestos to be removed at FDSH

Before another phase of hot and cold water pipes can be replaced at Fort Dodge Senior High, asbestos will need to be removed from the tunnels, according to Travis Filloon, Fort Dodge Community School District director of buildings and grounds.

The FDCSD board awarded a contract for the removal of the asbestos at its meeting Tuesday night.

Environmental Property Solutions, of Urbandale, submitted a low bid of $11,780 and was awarded the contract. The bid includes an alternate of $46 per fitting.

Two other firms submitted bids.

REW Services Corporation, of Des Moines, submitted a base bid of $22,942 with an alternate of $48 per fitting.

Site Services, of Algona, submitted a base bid of $28,688 with an alternate of $75 per fitting.

“Prices came in well underneath the estimate,” Filloon said.

The work will be completed in mid-May while school is in session.

However, it will not disrupt any classrooms, according to Filloon.

“It’s completely safe,” he said. “They have negative air machines running at all times. They actually wrap the pipe and work within a closed environment. It has negative air running around it.”

Once the asbestos is removed, the plan is to replace about 2,170 linear feet of piping.

Stein Heating and Cooling, of Webster City, will be completing that work during the summer at an estimated cost of $71,350.
