Are you smarter than a third- or fourth-grader?

Game show will raise funds to help students attend Dodger Academy

Four adults will find out if they are smarter than third- and fourth-graders during a Celebrity Game Show organized by students in the Fort Dodge Community School District.

The game show will be held Feb. 22 in the Butler Elementary School auditorium. A meal will be served at 5:45 p.m., with the show to follow.

The adults will face off against students from the Fort Dodge K-Kids Club, which is made up of third- and fourth-graders that are enrolled in Dodger Academy.

But no matter who wins the game show, the real winners, according to Julie Pingel, of the Fort Dodge Noon Kiwanis, will be Fort Dodge students who wish to enroll in the Dodger Academy.

“One of the things we focus on as the K-Kids is different causes in the area we can help with,” Pingel said. “It was brought to our attention the Dodger Academy is in need of a scholarship fund, so we decided to take that on as a project.”

Dodger Academy is an elementary after-school program that focuses on academic progress and improving social skills.

But there is about a $120 cost to attend the program, according to Pingel.

“For some families, that’s just outside of their ability to pay,” she said.

Proceeds from the game show will go to provide tuition assistance for families in need, which will allow more children the opportunity to attend Dodger Academy.

“There has been scholarship funds, but there’s not always enough to allow every student that would want to go, to go,” Pingel said. “This won’t solve the whole problem, but will bring awareness to the situation and hopefully offer some students the ability to go and attend on a scholarship.”

The Fort Dodge K-Kids Club, with the help of students from the Fort Dodge Senior High Key Club, are organizing the game show. The Fort Dodge Noon Kiwanis Club sponsors the Key Club and the K-Kids Club.

Tickets can be purchased for $10. Reserved seating is $15. Tickets are available at Fort Dodge Family Credit Union, United Bank of Iowa, and Kemna Auto of Fort Dodge.

Chili, hot dogs, and cinnamon rolls will be served for the meal.

During the show, one adult will test their knowledge for four rounds against two elementary students.

“The two kids can decide who will answer the questions and team up,” Pingel said. “We are hoping for a pretty good match with the kids. We thought it was important to do the two kids so they wouldn’t just be up there alone and be embarrassed if they didn’t know the answer.”

The questions will be of general interest.

“It will be a mix of questions,” Pingel said. “Some are geared for adults to answer more easily than the students and some are maybe more student-related that adults might not get.”

Although Pingel said the high school students would not be directly participating in the show, it was their hard work that made it happen.

“Students have put in a lot of work in designing the game and getting the questions,” she said.

Pingel hopes the event will also bring attention to the importance of service clubs.

“Service clubs are fantastic in Fort Dodge,” she said. “These groups are both service clubs, and I hope that other service club members come and support this because it’s so important to really encourage them at their age and have them understand what they can do if they work together and what they can accomplish.”
