Housing project planned in Goldfield

New homes to be located south of former school

GOLDFIELD — As many as five new homes could be added within the city of Goldfield.

The development will be located near School Street and Webster Street, according to Gabe Fiscus, mayor pro-tem.

Fiscus was voted by the City Council to serve as the project chairman for this development.

The city recently hired a firm to complete subplotting of the green space located just south of the old school building.

Schlotfeldt Engineering Inc., of Webster City, was hired at a cost of $8,400.

The property is zoned residential.

Fiscus said a final design has not yet been prepared.

During the first phase, he said up to five single-family homes could be built.

Fiscus said the city is working closely with Midwest Sustainable Homes, of Leon.

“We are trying to attract new residents with the addition of Prestage south of Eagle Grove,” Fiscus said. “We do have a need for more housing. We don’t have a lot of new housing available. This would be a good way to try and attract new residents to the community.”

In a separate project, the city is conducting a feasibility study of the old school building, located along School Street, according to Barbara Jergenson, city clerk.

“If it should stay up or come down,” Jergenson said. “There’s different lots around the school. Either a developer comes in or we sell the lot. That’s what we want to find out.”

The city of Goldfield took ownership of the structure in 2017.

The school was closed for educational purposes in 1993, when Goldfield merged its school with Clarion.

The city rents out the space to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and community members for sporting events or special receptions.
