Firefighters from both Duncombe and Webster City worked to extinguish a smoldering fire on a flatbed truck that was carrying bales of cornstalks late Monday afternoon on U.S. Highway 20, just east of Union Avenue. Duncombe Fire Chief Todd Bingham said he didn’t know the cause of the fire. Smoke was still billowing out of the bales at about 7:45 p.m. Monday. Nobody was hurt. The Webster County Sheriff’s Department and Iowa State Patrol also responded to the scene.
