376 to 376 — It’s official: As more votes come in, MNW bond remains a tie

‘That was so bizarre’

A rare tie vote in the Manson Northwest Webster bond issue has remained a tie, even after more votes were counted Tuesday.

The unofficial count last week was 375 votes to 375 votes.

The official count rose to 376 to 376 after two provisional ballots were allowed to be counted, said Webster County Auditor Doreen Pliner.

The measure failed, needing 60 percent to pass.

Pliner said at the time she’d never seen a tie like this.

“No, that was so bizarre,” she said.

The proposed measure would have been an $8.8 million bond for school renovations and expansion. The school board had hoped for a new addition to the junior/senior high school in Manson, and new flooring and bleachers for the elementary school in Barnum.

“At this time we are going to reflect, regroup, and determine our next steps as a district,” Superintendent Justin Daggett said after the vote.

“The school district of Manson Northwest Webster would like to thank all of the patrons who voted in the special election,” he said. “Although the results were not what we hoped for, we will continue to work towards the vision of providing our students and staff with facilities that enhance and enrich the educational experience in a safe and positive environment.”
