Gas line struck, building evacuated

Fort Dodge firefighters look over a natural gas line that was struck during construction Thursday morning at Fourth Avenue North and North 11th Street. Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said Fort Dodge Asphalt Co. was excavating in the area as part of a construction project when the 2-inch gas line was struck. The incident happened around 11:20 a.m. Hergenreter said MidAmerican Energy arrived on scene a short time later and clamped down the line, fixing the leak and allowing crews to repair it. A four-story building located at North 12th Street and Fourth Avenue North had to be evacuated because of high levels of gas inside the building. Hergenreter said the building was located downwind of the leak, causing gas to get inside. The Fort Dodge Police Department assisted with traffic control on scene.
