Angel Ride heads out Saturday

An annual road trip fundraiser across north central Iowa will be held this Saturday, with proceeds going towards supporting those battling cancer.

The 12th annual Angel Ride to Save the TaTas kicks off at Amigos, 280 N. First St.

Alli Berger, a member of the planning committee, said the main event will be a ride across the area, visiting various watering holes. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Amigos, with the ride leaving by 11 a.m.

The first stop will be the Co-op Bar and Grill in Pomeroy, followed by a lunch stop at Lynch’s Main Street Bar and Grill, in Rockwell City.

“From there, we will be going to the Lucky Pig in Farnhamville, and Jud’s Bar in Knierim,” Berger said.

Once they’re finished in Knierim, the Angel Ride will return to Fort Dodge and finish at Amigos.

Anybody is welcome to participate in the Angel Ride, regardless of the vehicle they are driving, Berger said.

Registration is $15 per rider.

People are also welcome to register early, and there is something special for those who do.

“If they register early, they get a free koozie,” she said.

Angel Ride committee members will be at Amigos tonight to help with set up. Those who want to register early can come by and do so then.

Additionally, there is a party bus that will be following the same route as the Angel Ride.

“It’s $25 per person and they can take a small cooler with them,” Berger said.

Once the ride returns to Amigos, there are more activities planned.

Berger said there will be both live and silent auctions. Among the items being auctioned off are a Green Bay Packers football signed by Brett Favre, a Chicago Cubs picture autographed by Mike Montgomery, as well as a custom-painted pedal car, casino packages and golf packages.

The silent auction will go until 5:30 p.m., and the live auction starts at 5 p.m.

Berger said Amigos will be providing a freewill donation meal, which will include a pork loin sandwich, baked beans and chips.

There will also be shirts for sale.

All the money raised by the Angel Ride will go towards covering uninsured services for breast cancer patients in the Fort Dodge area.

“It goes right to the UnityPoint Cancer Center,” she said. “Uninsured services include utility bills. If they go to Mayo (Clinic) or something like that, it pays for gas. We paid the insurance deductible for somebody’s car that got hit. It helps patients within a 75-mile radius of Fort Dodge.”

Money also pays for wigs, scarves, and gas cards to get to and from treatments.

Since its inception, the Angel Ride has raised $289,598.21, according to Berger.

“We truly believe every penny counts, every patient matters,” she said. “This event would not happen without the help of volunteers and the very generous donations given by businesses and individuals.”
