Frontier Days parade to impact downtown traffic

With the Frontier Days parade Saturday morning in Fort Dodge, a number of traffic changes will be occurring to ensure the safety of both spectators and parade participants.

The 44th annual parade will travel down Central Avenue starting at 10 a.m.

Perhaps the biggest change will be the prohibition of parking on Central Avenue starting at 8 a.m. Fort Dodge Police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said parking will reopen around noon, once the parade is over.

No parking will be allowed from the City Square to 21st Street.

“This span is to accommodate both the parade viewing area and the staging area for parade participants,” Gruenberg said.

Additionally, any vehicles still parked on Central Avenue are subject to being towed.

Parking will be available in city-owned lots and on side streets, with normal rules for weekend parking applying.

Gruenberg also said, starting at 10 a.m., the intersection of Central Avenue and 15th Street will be closed to through traffic. It will reopen once the parade is done.

For those drivers that need to cross the parade route, Gruenberg said there are alternate routes available. He encouraged drivers to use Third Street or 21st Street during the parade.

The cross streets along Central Avenue will all be closed to through traffic for the duration of the parade.

Anyone wanting to view the parade is encouraged to find seats on the sidewalks along the parade route.

These restrictions are being put in place for safety, Gruenberg said.

“To ensure the safety of spectators and participants we ask that alternative routes be taken if possible,” he said. “We would like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience during this event.”
