Adam Eckley, signal maintainer for Union Pacific Railroad Co., looks over a damaged crossing bar Monday afternoon. The bar was hit by a semitrailer truck driven by Clair Nerem, 74, of Badger. Nerem was traveling westbound on Iowa Highway 7 just east of Hayes Avenue when he passed through the crossing and struck the bar, according to Alex Winninger, Webster County sheriff’s deputy. A train reportedly passed through a short time later, Winninger said. No injuries were reported. The incident was dispatched at 3:48 p.m. Nerem was cited for failure to obey stop sign at a railroad crossing.
Eckley said he repairs a crossing bar about once
a week. Union Pacific owns an estimated
50 crossings.
