MNW to buy former bank

Board approves building purchase for new central office site

The Manson Northwest Webster School District’s central office will likely move here, to the former First Federal Bank, just down the street from its current office, seen at left. The MNW school board approved purchase of the building on Monday.

MANSON — Staff at the central office for Manson Northwest Webster schools are planning a move — about 40 yards up the street.

The MNW School Board on Monday approved the purchase of the building at 1030 Main St. from Dale Carlson.

The building was once an office for Carlson Trucking, and was originally a First Federal Bank. It will be sold to the school district for $135,000, said Superintendent Justin Daggett.

The transaction hasn’t been completed yet.

“We’re having the purchase agreement papers drawn up,” Daggett said. “When those are done, Mr. Carlson and I will close the deal and it will be official.”

The superintendent and the central office have been located downtown, at 1016 Main St., since November 2012, Daggett said.

In that time, the school has been leasing the office from Josh Sturgis, who used to have a chiropractic office there. Sturgis now has an office at the MAC Center, the former elementary in Manson, where the central office used to be.

“Even before I took the superintendent job, it was a high priority for the board to have a permanent solution for the central office,” Daggett said. “So when this opportunity came to us, it was the most fiscally responsible decision. We would more than double our square footage for a fraction of what it would cost us to build a central office.

“After discussing it for a while the board decided it would be in the best interest of the district at this time to move forward with this purchase.

“The timing of it is pretty good because we’ll be able to move some things from the high school to the central office location, which will free up some space for us to convert to classrooms,” he added. “That’s going to help us for the next school year, to be able to accommodate the numbers in that building.”
