Man found with stolen vehicle faces theft charge

Tate Steburg

A Fort Dodge man was arrested Friday night after police say they found him with a stolen vehicle.

Tate O. Steburg, 46, of 1526 Seventh Ave. N., was arrested about 10:30 p.m. and appeared in Webster County Magistrate Court Saturday, appearing by video from the jail floor.

His bond was set at $10,000 cash only.

Fort Dodge Police Officer Matt Weir said he observed Steburg blocking traffic with a white Chevy Traverse in the 1500 block of Seventh Avenue North, according to the criminal complaint.

The Traverse was connected with a tow strap to a black Ford truck. Steberg said he was trying to tow the Traverse out of his parking lot, according to the complaint.

The plates on the Traverse came back stolen, the complaint said.

In recommending a cash-only bond, Assistant Webster County Attorney Hans Becker said Steburg is a four-time convicted felon, currently on parole, and the charge will likely be increased to habitual offender.

Steburg was charged with first-degree theft, a Class C felony. His preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 6.
