Toys for Tots drive underway
Fareway and the United States Marine Corps Reserve are teaming up again to make sure children have toys to play with this holiday season.
The Toys for Tots drive is ongoing at the Fort Dodge Fareway, 1231 First Ave. S., through Dec. 23.
Mike Burckart, Fareway assistant manager, said every Fareway store participates in the drive.
“Every store, corporatewide, does a round up or request for a donation at the register starting in late September and running through Dec. 23,” he said. “They ask customers if they want to round up or pay $1 or $5 for Toys for Tots.”
Those donations are marked throughout the store with paper trains.
In addition to asking for donations, Burckart said the stores also have a bin at the front of the store where toys can be donated.
The toys that are collected should be new and unwrapped.
All 120 Fareway stores in Iowa are participating.
According to a press release from Fareway, this year the Marine Corps reported more than $162,000 was raised and 6,735 toys were collected as part of the Toys for Tots drive.
“We are thankful to Fareway for their partnership in the Toys for Tots campaign,” Sgt. Andy Hermann, with the U.S. Marine Corps, said. “We truly wouldn’t be able to reach as many children in local areas without the help of Fareway and its generous customers.”
Fareway Stores Inc. Chief Executive Officer Reynolds W. Cramer said they are also proud of the partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps.
“Our generous customers go above and beyond to donate both unwrapped toys and monetary proceeds in order to bring joy to underprivileged children.”
