DAKOTA CITY — A suspect reported to be hiding under the deck of a home at 205 Fourth St. S. in Dakota City was shot and killed by an officer Saturday afternoon after he fired a weapon into the air and pointed it at officers responding to the call.

Officers with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded to the address about 2:30 p.m. to answer a call about a wanted individual who was hiding under a deck, according to a press release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Once there, the officers encountered an armed suspect who fired a weapon into the air and then pointed the gun at the officers.

An officer with the Iowa DNR then fired at the suspect, who was fatally wounded, the press release reported.

The Department of Public Safety did not identify the officers involved. The deceased subject is also not being identified pending notification of relatives.

Police and investigators were still on the scene late Saturday afternoon.

What appeared to be a red medical kit lay on the ground near the deck and several yellow numbered evidence markers sat nearby in the grass. The shooting scene appeared to be inside a short chain link fenced-in area in the back yard.

Several officers were still on the scene at dusk.

The investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will continue.
