McGrath wins re-election in Eagle Grove

Sandy McGrath

EAGLE GROVE — Mayor Sandy McGrath won re-election Tuesday by less than 20 votes.

McGrath, the incumbent, received a total of 370 votes. Her challenger, Denny Vandewater, collected 356 votes.

Those results are unofficial.

McGrath, who was born and raised in Eagle Grove, said the key to her success was to stay positive.

“I think the key was to stay positive — to look for progress in Eagle Grove,” she said. “I ran on what has been done and what will be. We are on to good things.”

“I appreciate all the people that came out and voted for me and stayed positive with me,” she added.

She was pleased with the voter turnout.

“It meant people were listening and people are active and engaged and that’s what we need for progress,” she said.

A capital improvements plan, the hiring of a new city administrator, and the completion of a new multimillion-dollar wastewater treatment plant are among McGrath’s top priorities, she said.

“We need to get that city administrator who is engaged and involved in the community and has a good grasp on economic development and business,” she said.

She apologized that the election turned “negative.”

“I pride myself in my ethics and I am disappointed and I apologize that, during the election process, it did turn negative,” McGrath said. “I think we need to wrap around and get that trust back and keep moving forward.”

She is asking that the city council continue to work together.

“The council needs to work as a group,” she said. “We need to be involved with the community and other organizations and other service groups. It’s going to take all of us to make it a success.”

She added, “Once a decision is made by the council we all need to get behind it. Everyone has their vote and their opinion, but once a decision is made we need to get behind it. That’s how you keep going forward.”

Denny Vandewater will continue to serve as Ward 3 councilman. He has lived in Eagle Grove for the past 36 years.

Attempts to reach Vandewater Tuesday night were unsuccessful.
