Fort Dodge City Council seeks EPA grant

The city of Fort Dodge is seeking a $300,000 federal grant to pay for assessing sites for contamination.

The City Council approved the grant application during a special meeting at noon Wednesday. The application is being submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

City officials will learn in March if the grant will be awarded.

If it’s awarded, the money will be used to pay for environmental assessments citywide, according to Vickie Reeck, the city’s economic and community development manager.

Those assessments will be conducted at brownfield sites, which Reeck said are properties that are known to be contaminated or are considered very likely to have contamination.

The assessments will also be done at grayfield sites, which are vacant, underused or obsolete buildings.

Councilmen Dave Flattery, Andy Fritz, Dean Hill and Terry Moehnke voted to approve the grant application. Councilmen Kim Alstott, Neven Conrad and Jeff Halter were absent.
