Graettinger woman seriously hurt in crash

EMMETSBURG — A Graettinger woman suffered serious injuries in a truck versus car crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 18 and Iowa Highway 4 Saturday night, according to a press release from the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash was reported shortly after 7 p.m. in Emmetsburg.

Abbey Berven, 26, was driving a Honda Accord southbound, according to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department.

Berven reportedly stopped at the four-way intersection before pulling out into the path of a westbound Toyota Tacoma, driven by James Miller, 68, of Spirit Lake.

The two vehicles collided in the intersection.

Berven had to be extricated from the vehicle by first responders, according to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department.

She was transported by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital with incapacitating injuries, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Berven was later airlifted to another hospital, according to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department.

Miller was transported by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital with minor injuries.

Berven’s car was totaled. Miller’s pickup truck had an estimated $5,000 in damage.

Berven and Miller were both reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department, Emmetsburg Police Department, Emmetsburg Volunteer Fire Department, Palo Alto County Ambulance Service, and the Iowa State Patrol were on scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department.
