Water main job OK’d by Fort Dodge City Council

The Fort Dodge City Council on Monday launched a water main upgrade and sold a rundown house owned by the local government.

The council hired Crow River Construction LLC, of New London, Minnesota, to install the new water main at a cost of $136,952.

The new line will be a 12-inch diameter pipe under 20th Avenue North between Williams Drive and North 14th Street. It will replace a 2-inch diameter line.

Other bidders for the job were Rasch Construction Inc., of Fort Dodge, $150,700; King Construction LLC, Wall Lake, $158,877.15; Holbrook Construction Inc., Yale,$163,590; On Track Construction LLC, Nevada, $167,945; and J & K Contracting LLC, Ames, $175,640.

The house at 801 N. 16th St., was sold to Mike and Carla Crawford, of Fort Dodge, for $13,000.

In their proposal, the Crawfords indicated that the windows, brick work, detached garage, gutters and roof will be fixed this summer. Interior renovations are to start this fall, with all work being finished by October 2018.

Councilmen Kim Alstott, Neven Conrad, Dave Flattery, Andy Fritz, Jeffrey Halter and Dean Hill voted in favor of the sale,

Councilman Terry Moehnke opposed the sale. He favored an earlier proposal to sell the property to the United Bank of Iowa, which has a mortgage on the property. The bank offered $5,000 for the property and pledged to repair the windows, roof and gutters within 60 days. The bank also indicated that it had a buyer lined up for the house.
