United Way honors businesses

The Messenger and three other businesses were honored Thursday night for their contributions to the United Way of Greater Fort Dodge.

Randy Kuhlman, the chief executive officer of the group, said the newspaper “does a fantastic job of getting our message out.”

He added that The Messenger donates warehouse space for Bridging the Gap, a program that provides beds and mattresses for children that do not have them.

Kuhlman recognized the employees of the local Cargill plant for raising more than $49,000 for the organization.

He recognized Valero Renewables, which has an ethanol plant in Webster County, for having a high number of it employees contribute. He said the plant has 81 employees and 61 of them contribute. He said their average annual contribution is $580.

He also recognized Citizens Community Credit Union for having a high percentage of employees contribute.

Upper Des Moines Opportunity was declared the local United Way’s Outstanding Partner Agency. Kuhlman said the agency served 5,300 households last year.

The honors were presented at the annual dinner of the greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance at the Best Western Starlite Village Inn & Suites, 1518 Third Ave. N.W.
