Track project OK’d by Humboldt school board

DAKOTA CITY — The Humboldt Community School Board awarded a contract for the 2017 track improvement project at Monday’s school board meeting.

“It is part of our facility plan and it has been in our plan for a number of years,” said Superintendent Greg Darling.“There are three layers of the track and we are going to tear it out completely and put in a new track.”

The project also includes painting and some drainage work

It is an eight-lane track with a state-of-the-art base, Darling said.

Work will start May 18 with a completion date of October.

The district received five competitive bids, Darling said. The bids came in low because prices are down, he believes. Iowa Athletic Field Construction Co., of Webster City, was the low bidder at $333,007. The engineer’s estimate was $378,000. The board awarded the work to Iowa Athletic Field Construction Co.

In other business, the board recognized members of the district’s Champions for Children with plaques. The program is a mentor program for new teachers.

“We welcome them in and spend time with them for two years,” Darling said.

He believes the district has been a front runner in the mentor program.

“It has really helped our district in bringing people in,” he said. “These people put in endless hours to help new staff be a part and feel a part of our Wildcat family. It really does make a difference. I think it is one of the things that separates good schools from the bad is welcoming people.”

Next month the board will review the district’s property tax rate. The rate is expected to go down next year to an estimated $13.20 per $1,000 of taxable value.

This year the rate is $13.76 per $1,000 of taxable value.
