Fort Dodge Council may attempt to override salary veto

The Fort Dodge City Council may try to override a recent veto by Mayor Matt Bemrich when it meets on Monday.

The council voted on Feb. 13 to raise the salary of the mayor from $15,000 to $17,000, effective in 2018. Bemrich immediately pledged to veto the measure and did so last week.

Five of the seven council members would have to vote in favor of overriding the veto in order for the effort to succeed.

The override attempt is far from the only thing on the council’s agenda.

The elected officials will first meet at 5 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S., for a series of workshops. Those workshops will include a presentation from the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association, an update on efforts to combat the emerald ash borer and a briefing on a sanitary sewer project.

The council’s regular business meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building. That’s when the council members may try to override the mayoral veto.

Also during the business meeting, the council will consider starting the process of vacating part of an alley to make way for the construction of a new People’s Choice Credit union building near Fifth Avenue South and 17th Street.

Contracts for more asbestos testing at the Warden Plaza, engineering services for a new water main and bridge inspections are on the council’s agenda as well.
