East Sac schools implement Teacher Leadership and Compensation

SAC CITY — The East Sac County Community School District will be starting a new program to help support its teaching staff.

This year, Teacher Leadership and Compensation is getting started at the school district, according to Superintendent Barb Kruthoff.

According to the Iowa Department of Education, the TLC system “rewards effective teachers with leadership opportunities and higher pay, attracts promising new teachers with competitive starting salaries and more support, and fosters greater collaboration for all teachers to learn from each other.”

In an email, Kruthoff said the program is just getting started.

“Our instructional coaches and mentors have been working with teachers in the district,” Kruthoff said. “Like all new programs it is a bit hard to measure success but we are very pleased with how the teaching staff has responded to it.”

The TLC program is one way the district is looking to improve student achievement.

“Like all schools we feel the pressure to improve test scores and to do that we will need to continue to improve core instruction in all of the district’s classrooms,” Kruthoff said.

While that’s a challenge for the district, Kruthoff said she’s hopeful the results of the TLC program will be beneficial to students.

“It is always challenging to improve achievement,” she said. “Our TLC coaches and mentors are working with teachers in new and different ways than in the past. We believe we will see the value of that in the near future.”
