A day of Black History

Pleasant Valley, AFES programs rescheduled

A Black History Expo and the Pleasant Valley yesterday and today program have been rescheduled for March 11.

The two programs were canceled Saturday due to inclement weather.

Sherry Washington will be hosting the Pleasant Valley yesterday and today program at 11 a.m. at the Fort Dodge Public Library, while Charles Clayton, executive director of Athletics for Education and Success, will host the Black History Expo from from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Athletics for Education and Success, 712 Third St. N.W.

“We are calling it a day of Black History,” Washington said. “Everything else will remain the same.”

Both events are free and open to the public.

The Pleasant Valley yesterday and today program will offer attendees a glimpse into the past of what an area known as the flats were like in Fort Dodge.

A slideshow presentation as well as guest speakers will be part of the program.

State Rep. Helen Miller, D-Fort Dodge, and Charlene Washington will be among the guest speakers.

The Black History Expo will feature a number of presentations and speakers, including The Rev. Dr. Michael Blackwell, of Trinity United Methodist Church.

The Expo will also feature the Second Baptist Church youth department performing a skit, artwork from the Rev. Madai Taylor, of Agape Church KDM, a presentation on the history of hip-hop music and a sampling of different cultural foods.

Local business that are owned by African-Americans will also be participating, according to Clayton, which include Angela’s Hair & More Beauty Supply and TC Mae’s Family Diner.

Washington said the events are separate from each other, but in the future the two may be combined.

Her hope for March 11 is that the weather cooperates.

“Hopefully we don’t get snow on that day,” she said.
