2 of 3 Ames Sunday shooting victims from FD

Two of the three victims who were injured in an early morning drive-by shooting in Ames over the weekend are from Fort Dodge, according to a news release from the Ames Police Department.

Naronne Willie Cole Jr., 22, and Antwane Gordon, 24, both of Fort Dodge, were hit by shots fired from a red car in the 200 block of Welch Avenue shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Ames police reported.

Kyle Heaton, 22, of Ames, was also wounded.

It’s believed that all three shooting victims have since been released from the hospitals they were taken to, according to Commander Geoff Huff, of the Ames Police Department.

According to Ames police reports, Gordon and Cole were involved in the fight that police were originally called to before the shooting took place minutes later.

Heaton was not involved in the alleged altercations, according to the report.

No criminal charges are expected to be filed for Cole and Gordon, Huff reported.

Cole is enrolled at Iowa Central Community College, but does not live on campus, according to Tom Beneke, vice president of enrollment management and student services.

Gordon is not an Iowa Central student, Beneke said.

The four men who were arrested in connection to the shooting near Iowa State University’s campus were students living on campus at Iowa Central Community College.

Terrion Maxfield, 20, Desmon R. Siner, 19, Charles Smith, 20, and Traveion D. Henry, 21, were all charged Sunday for their alleged involvement in the shooting incident.

Beneke issued the following statement Monday.

“At this point the college will work hand-in-hand with all law enforcement agencies in the ongoing investigation,” Beneke said. “The college is not at liberty to discuss any disciplinary action that may be imposed by the college on any student involved in the incident.”

Maxfield and Siner were charged with attempted murder, a class B felony, according to Fort Dodge police reports.

Smith and Henry, who were arrested later, were charged with attempted murder, aiding and abetting, a class B felony, Ames police reported.

All four men are from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The two Ames officers, Sgt. Derek Grooters, and Officer Clint Hertz, who reportedly opened fire on the suspects’ vehicle, have been assigned to the department Safe Neighborhoods Team and remain on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, the Ames police reported.

The guns fired by the suspects are believed to be handguns, according to Huff.

Maxfield and Siner were eventually located by Fort Dodge police at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge with gunshot wounds.

Huff could not confirm that their wounds resulted from the shots fired by the Ames officers.

The vehicle driven by the suspects, Maxfield and Siner, was located at about 2:51 a.m. at Budget Host Inn, 116 Kenyon Road W., according to Fort Dodge police reports. The vehicle was reportedly parked and unoccupied.

Multiple agencies also cleared six floors at the Iowa Central dorms East Tower before Smith and Henry were arrested.

Maxfield, Siner, Smith and Henry have all been transported to Story County Jail.

The Ames Police Department, Fort Dodge Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa Department of Transportation, Webster County sheriff’s office, and Fort Dodge Fire Department assisted.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing to investigate the incident.
