Fire started in dog house damages garage

A detached two car garage at 317 Ave. E owned by Scott Davis was damaged Wednesday morning in a fire that kept firefighters on the scene for a couple of hours.

Fort Dodge Fire Chief Kent Hulett said the fire — reported at 10:51 a.m. — started outside the garage in a dog house/kennel.

“It was caused by an unattended heat lamp in the dog house,” Hulett said.

Arriving crews found the dog house fire had spread into the attic space in the garage though the soffit above it. The fire caused damage to several rafters in the roof.

“It burned through several trusses,” Hulett said.

Hulett said the fire is estimated to have caused about $5,000 in damages, mostly structural. A motorcycle stored inside the building escaped serious damage. There were no injuries.

The dogs were not injured.

“We let them all out,” Hulett said. “The owner was able to round them up later.”

The canine occupants of the kennel and dog house are not suspects in the fire.

“The dogs weren’t involved with starting the fire,” he said.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:54 p.m.
