FD council to move on sister city agreement with Gjakova

The Fort Dodge City Council is expected to act on an agreement Monday that will create new links with a community in Kosovo.

The council will consider the sister cities agreement with Gjakova when it meets Monday. Mayor Matt Bemrich and the mayor of Gjakova are then expected to sign it during a ceremony Tuesday morning.

By approving the agreement, leaders of the two communities pledge that their cities will cooperate on cultural, economic and academic matters. The two communities will also work together on city development issues.

The council’s work on Monday will begin well before the sister cities agreement comes up for a vote.

Starting at 5 p.m., there will be a workshop session in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S. During that session, the elected officials will begin their work on the 2017-2018 city budget. Proposed spending plans for the water and sewer systems and the road use tax will be discussed.

The budget work is starting because Iowa cities must submit their spending plans to the state by mid-March even though the fiscal year begins July 1.

The council’s regular business meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building. That’s when the sister cities agreement will be acted upon.

Also during the business meeting, the council will again consider buying a small pickup to be used to plow snow from sidewalks. That purchase was postponed during the Nov. 21 meeting after Bemrich objected to a plan to buy the truck from an out-of-town dealership.

The council will also consider promoting Rita Schmidt to library director. She has been the assistant library director for more than a decade.
