Three interns tell what brought them to FD and Webster County

Editor’s note: Interns involved in the Internship+ Program will share a little about themselves each Sunday, throughout the summer. This is the first in that series of Q&As.

Rob Leigh

Hometown: Fort Dodge

School: St. Cloud State University

Major: English and film studies minor

Company: City of Fort Dodge

Position: Marketing & Communications intern

Why did you choose your field of study?

I think that writing is the only way that someone can really express their thoughts and opinions.

Why did you choose the company you are interning for?

Fort Dodge gave me a great childhood. It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community.

What do you like most about the company you are working for?

I like how excited everyone is about the town of Fort Dodge and how they are always looking for improvement.

What do you hope to get out of your internship?

I hope to improve my technical writing, filmmaking, and marketing skills.

What are your overall career goals?

I would like to use my knowledge of writing and film to make new levels of communication possible. There are many possibilities.

What are you looking forward to the most with the Internship+ Program?

I am excited to make connections with the other interns and pick up some skills along the way.

What do you like about Fort Dodge?

I like the overall sense of community you feel here.

What hobbies do you enjoy on your free time?

I enjoy swimming, playing and listening to music, watching films, and spending time with family and friends.

Jessica Zelip

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

School: Missouri University of Science and Technology

Major: Mechanical engineering

Company: Cargill

Position: Production management engineer

Why did you choose your field of study?

I had always been good at math and science, so after doing some research I discovered engineering, and it’s been a match ever since.

Why did you choose the company you are interning for?

Cargill is an extremely large and diverse company. I thought it would be great for experience and future career possibilities.

What do you like most about the company you are working for?

Everyone at Cargill was extremely welcoming when I first started and I was given projects to work on that actually have an impact in the plant.

What do you hope to get out of your internship?

Overall experience is the main thing I was looking for. Work in a classroom is extremely different than seeing everything at work out in the field.

What are your overall career goals?

My main goal after I graduate is to get a job as a project management engineer in a company where there’s plenty of room for movement within positions.

What are you looking forward to the most with the Internship+ Program?

I’m excited to meet the other interns in town since I’ve been here since January.

What do you like about Fort Dodge?

It has a small-town feel, but it’s still relatively close to Ames, Des Moines and Minneapolis.

What hobbies do you enjoy on your free time?

I enjoy cooking and travelling.

Koerner

Hometown: Green Bay, Wisconsin

School: University of Wisconsin — Madison

Major: Chemistry

Company: Cargill

Position: Food Safety and Quality chemist intern

Why did you choose your field of study?

I have always enjoyed science and learning about how things work. I like how there is opportunity for discovery in chemistry.

Why did you choose the company you are interning for?

Cargill has a great culture that prioritizes sustainability and safety while aiming to nourish the world. It offers a wide range of career opportunities to explore.

What do you like most about the company you are working for?

Everyone is friendly, which creates a positive atmosphere and encourages me to ask questions and work hard.

What do you hope to get out of your internship?

I hope to discover if quality chemistry is a good fit for me as a future career, and use this opportunity to interact with and explore other positions to determine where I would be most successful.

What are your overall career goals?

I plan to work as a quality chemist or in research and development for a biotechnology company, perhaps continuing with Cargill.

What are you looking forward to the most with the Internship+Program?

I am looking forward to meeting other people in the area and learning how I can fully utilize the time spent at my internship.

What do you like about Fort Dodge?

The people are very friendly,and the river and landscape are beautiful.

What hobbies do you enjoy on your free time?

I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading, gardening, biking, and yoga.
