More interns tell what brought them to FD and Webster County

Editor’s note: Interns involved in the Internship+ Program through the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance share a little about themselves each Sunday throughout the summer. This is another in that series of Q&As.

School: Iowa State University

Major: Accounting, Finance

Company: Decker Truck Line Inc.

Position: Accounting intern

Why did you choose your field of study?

I knew I would like to work in the business field, and I enjoy working with numbers. Accounting and Finance are both very versatile and give me many options career-wise.

Why did you choose the company you are interning for?

They are a reputable, local company and will help me to get a lot of experience in private accounting.

What do you like most about the company you are working for?

Everyone has been extremely helpful and they have shown me many different aspects of accounting that will help me in the future.

What do you hope to get out of your internship?

I am looking forward to getting hands on accounting experience and being able to apply some of what I have learned in my courses.

What are your overall career goals?

I plan to graduate with a double major in accounting and finance and obtain my CPA to become a public accountant.

What are you looking forward to the most with the Internship+ Program?

Learning more about the business community within Fort Dodge and meeting new people.

What do you like about Fort Dodge?

It is easy to build relationships within the community. I like that Fort Dodge is investing in the future of the community to attract young people to the area.

What hobbies do you enjoy on your free time?

Spending time with my friends and family, bike riding, and being outdoors

SARAH CROUCH

Hometown: Eaton, Indiana

School: Michigan Technological University

Major: Environmental engineering

Company: Elanco

Position: HSE intern

Why did you choose your field of study?

A healthy environment, focusing on clean water, is a right for all humans.

Why did you choose the company you are interning for?

I wanted to see what an environmental engineer does in the industry.

What do you like most about the company you are working for?

The workplace environment, everyone is very friendly and helpful.

What do you hope to get out of your internship?

I hope to narrow down my career path.

What are your overall career goals?

Help the environment in large and small ways.

What are you looking forward to the most with the Internship+ Program?

I am looking forward to meeting interns across many job fields.

What do you like about Fort Dodge?

I like the small town feel, but there is still a lot to do.

What hobbies do you enjoy on your free time?

I enjoy being active and outdoors.

JOHN DE VRIES

Hometown: Sheldon

School: Iowa State University

Major: Civil engineering

Company: Snyder & Associates

Position: Field inspector

Why did you choose your field of study?

I have always found interest in math and sciences but I can’t stand being stuck inside all day. Civil engineering gave me the perfect balance between the two!

Why did you choose the company you are interning for?

I felt like they were as equally invested with me as I was with them. In addition to that, they are always involved with improving small town communities, something any small town Iowan can appreciate.

What do you like most about the company you are working for?

The diversity of workers employed. From the survey crews to design, Snyder has a very broad employee group.

What do you hope to get out of your internship?

I would like to get really good reading Construction plans, being able to translate between plans and the project in the field. And with that strengthen communication skills, especially with foremen.

What are your overall career goals?

Upon completion of my schooling and working for the needed time I want to obtain my P.E. License and become a registered Engineer in the state of Iowa. I’m not sure where I would like to end up permanently but definitely within the field of Civil Engineering.

What are you looking forward to the most with the Internship+ Program?

Being able to network with other fellow interns and see what projects they get to work on.

What do you like about Fort Dodge?

I like all of the outdoor activities in the area. I live in Boone and come up to fish at Brushy Creek often and always am impressed with some of the Webster County conservation efforts.

What hobbies do you enjoy on your free time?

I am an avid outdoorsman. I spend any bit of my free time bowhunting or fishing.
