Bishop Garrigan wins home quiz bowl

ALGONA — For just the second time in school history, Bishop Garrigan won the championship in their home quiz bowl tournament. The team of Alex Mammen, Billy Erpelding, Aidan Koob, and Eric Thul finished the day with a perfect 12-0 record. In preliminary matches they defeated teams from North Iowa, Newman Catholic, St. Edmond, Algona, Clay Central Everly, North Union, and two different teams from Estherville Lincoln Central.

They scored 1,115 points to take the top seed going into playoffs. They then beat teams from Emmetsburg, St. Edmond, and Ankeny to advance to the championship game.

In the final round they faced a different Ankeny team. It was a close game that ended in a tie. In sudden-death overtime, the Bears won by answering a question about calculus. The win will qualify Bishop Garrigan to make their 20th trip to the National Academic Championships.

Thirty-three teams from 14 schools competed in the tournament. Two other Garrigan teams finished among the top eight overall. The team of Logan Heying, Gabriel Trainer, Sami Darling, and Bryce Capesius ended up in fourth place, while Abbi Heying, Amanda Thilges, Jenna Heinen, Joe Trainer, and Mya Kemna were seeded No. 8 going into playoffs.

The Bears competed Oct. 20 in a tournament at Ankeny Centennial and will compete on Nov. 3 at Algona High. They will host the Top of Iowa Conference tournament Nov. 10.
