Algona jazz choir takes part in festival

ALGONA — The Algona High School inTunE jazz choir participated in the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Choir Festival on Feb. 6 at Emmetsburg High School. One 1A, three 2A, and four 3A high schools from around North Central Iowa participated in the event.

The Algona High School Jazz Choir, inTunE, directed by Jamie Kelley, received a high Division II (Excellent) rating, just one point short of a Division I (Superior) rating, receiving a Division I rating from one judge and two high Division II’s from the other two judges. Choirs were evaluated on characteristics such as: tone quality, blend, rhythmic feel, interpretation, precision, musicianship, mic etiquette, balance, and the rhythm section. Each choir is then rated according to Iowa High School Music Association guidelines as Division I (Superior), Division II (Excellent), Division III (Good), Division IV (Fair), Division V (Poor), or the choir can choose to receive comments only. Song selections performed were, “Taking A Chance On Love” (Featured soloists were Paige Nygaard and Cameron Kaltschnee.), “What A Wonderful World” (Featured soloists were Tatum Phelps and Theo Herbst-Ulmer.), and “Time After Time” (Featured soloist was Anna Cox).
