Iowa Central dance team ready for ‘Curtain Call’

The 11th annual Iowa Central Community College Curtain Call will take place Thursday and Friday at Decker Auditorium. On both nights, the show will begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and $1 for Iowa Central students. Tickets for this event can be purchased at the door or at the Iowa Central Bookstore.

These two nights of dancing are to raise funds for an upcoming competition in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Iowa Central Dance Team has diligently prepared for the National Dance Alliance Collegiate National Championships by spending countless hours practicing, conditioning, and getting ready to compete on the national level.

Iowa Central has made its mark at NDA Nationals and plans on continuing to do so. This year marks the ninth consecutive year that the team has traveled to NDA Nationals. Each year, the team consistently places in finals and the top eight. In 2018, the Iowa Central Dance Team is setting more records.

Last year, Iowa Central set a college record finishing third in the nation among all Division III community colleges and small four-year universities.

The team was also successful during the Iowa State Dance Team Associate State Championships. ICCC placed first in pom, jazz, and hip hop. The Triton Dancers have had many years of competitive success and take pride in representing Fort Dodge and Iowa Central at the national level.

The team started preparing for NDA summer camp in July 2017, when the bid to attend NDA Nationals was received. Triton Dancers put in work year-round with football games, basketball games, senior visit days, and local performances on top of their competitive season.

In addition to year-round work, the team is aided by strength and conditioning coach Miguel Secor. He ensures that the dancers have the endurance that a competition of this level demands.

Coach Lesa Dencklau had some words to say about the endurance of the team.

“We have a team of 16 very talented and hard-working athletes this season,” she said. “We rehearse countless hours in preparation for our national competition. In Daytona, we will compete against roughly 15 teams from all across the country and Japan.”

She also explained the measures it takes to get ready for the national competition.

“We strive to produce a routine with a strong theme, unique costuming, and creative music to make us memorable to the judging panel,” Dencklau said.

The dancers are currently asking businesses and community members to sponsor a concert. Another chance to donate to the Triton Dancers comes during their silent auction, which has been held for the three past years. The silent auction will have gift baskets from various businesses, gift certificates to local restaurants, and Iowa Central apparel.

During intermission at the Curtain Call, there will be baked goods for purchase.

All funds raised go directly toward sending the team to this highly prestigious college national event, which is the largest cheer and dance competition in the world.
