Striking up the band, one last time

King Band to perform final indoor concert at Decker Auditorium April 2

The third and final indoor concert for the Karl L. King Municipal Band’s 2017 winter season will be held next Sunday.

The concert will be held at Decker Auditorium, on the Iowa Central Community College campus, starting at 3:30 p.m.

The final concert has multiple purposes every year. One of them will be the presentation of the Karl L. King scholarships. Students will audition during the day and the recipients will be announced during the afternoon concert.

Those selected will either receive a $5,000 scholarship to Iowa Central or a $1,000 scholarship to any four-year Iowa college or university.

Funding for the scholarships is provided by the King Band Scholarship Fund along with Dr. Greg Olson in memory of his parents and his wife’s parents.

All who audition are also invited to join in playing a selection with the band during the concert.

The major scholarship recipient will perform their award-winning solo.

In addition to the scholarship presentation, the concert will also coincide with the college’s Focus series. This year, Iowa Central has chosen the region of Kosovo and the Balkans for its cultural emphasis.

The selections on the program will reflect their heritage in music.

Compositions on this hourlong concert will include Karl L. King’s 1931 march, “International Favorites,” and his 1912 dance, “Friendship,” written when he was 21 years old while he was the euphonium player with the Sells-Floto Circus.

Classical offerings will include “Marche Slave,” by P.I. Tschaikovsky; “Procession of Nobles” from “Mlada,” by Nicolas Rimsky-Korsakov; and “Turkish March” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Other classical works include “Albanian Dance,” by Shelley Hanson and “The Armed Man” by Karl Jenkins. This latter selection is Movement I from “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace,” and was dedicated “to the victims of the Kosovo crisis.”

The concert will conclude with Vasilij Agapkin’s fine march, “A Slavic Farewell,” followed by the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Admission is free.

The band’s next performance will be on Memorial Day, May 29.

The summer series of concerts will by held on eight Sunday evenings during June and July, beginning June 11 and lasting through July 30, at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park.

The band is conducted by Jerrold P. Jimmerson, along with Dr. David Klee serving as assistant conductor.
