Hawkeye Community Theatre: Comedy mystery to premier March 29

The Hawkeye Community Theatre will bring mystery and comedy to the stage during its five performance run of “A Haunting We Will Go.”

Director Michael Shoopman said the play was written by Tim Kelly and described it as “a dark mystery-comedy that borders on farce and that is where we will push it right off the cliff.”

The play follows Norma Corwin, a young TV producer, who decides to spend a night alone in the Inn of the Three Sisters.

The hotel has a reputation for hauntings, which include an unsolved murder.

Soon after she begins her stay, the spirits of the inn begin to appear.

Among the spirits are Madame Lugosi, an ESP expert; a young woman who tries to warn Corwin of the danger she faces and the three spirits of the young sisters.

Shoopman said the play features a large cast “of 20 souls, which always makes things more fun from a production standpoint.”

“The larger the cast, the more interaction between the various types of personalities that occur,” Shoopman said. “One actor will feed off another and it snowballs from there. On the downside, handling that many actors at once is like trying to herd cats.”

He added the show has misidentified characters that come and go and keep the audience guessing as to what is going on until the conclusion.

The actors themselves are a talented group, according to Shoopman.

“This group is an elective batch of actors from a broad spectrum of society,” he said. “We left no stone unturned in order to dig up some of these individuals. It is scary seeing this much talent on stage at once.”

The show will also feature special effects and sound effects.

“Special effects, sound and lighting play as big as a role as the actors,” Shoopman said. “When you have this many bodies flying on and off during the run of a show, the planning and movement is more harried than, say, a cast of three during a slow moving drama.”

He added the show will be entertaining.

“You will enjoy this larger than life show,” Shoopman said. “It is a fast, funny, spooky way to usher in spring.”

“A Haunting We Will Go” premieres Wednesday at 7 p.m., with performances continuing every night through Friday.

There will also be two performances on April 12; an afternoon show at 2 p.m. and a matinee at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance by visiting mkt.com/hawkeyetheatre or at the door.
