The 10th anniversary of Curtain Call at Iowa Central Community College will feature a variety of performances to help commemorate the occasion.

During Curtain Call, the annual presentation of Iowa Central’s dance team, audience members can expect to see every performance the dancers have done at home football and basketball games, as well as all of their competition pieces from both state and national competitions.

“This is the eleventh year since the dance team became competitive and holding Curtain Call every year is a way for us to give the girls an opportunity to showcase everything they have worked for all season,” Head Dance Coach Lesa Dencklau said.

In addition, Dencklau said audience members can expect to see a dance number from some of the college’s past head and assistant coaches, including herself and current assistant dance coach Alyssa Johnson.

Besides Iowa Central’s dance team, others featured during Curtain Call include the United All Stars, Fort Dodge Senior High Dance Team, Dance Connections and Dance2Xtreme, of Lake City.

The senior dance members will also be performing solo pieces they have choreographed themselves.

“This is the time for the seniors to show everything they have learned throughout their time at Iowa Central,” Dencklau said.

She added most of the dance styles consist of pomme, jazz and hip-hop, though the solo pieces will be more contemporary and lyrical, in addition to being “very moving and touching.”

“What really sets this show and all of our dance numbers above and beyond is our multiple costumes and lighting,” she said. “We have professional lighting design done with moving lights and each number has different lighting effects.”

To help raise funds for Curtain Call, the dance team is offering sponsorship packages with tickets to the concert and on-stage advertising.

Before the performance, there will also be a silent auction. Some of the items being auctioned off include gift cards for Dunkin’ Donuts and Pancheros, a Green Door Photography package and Triton apparel from the campus bookstore.

There will also be a bake sale during intermission.

All the money raised and donations made during Curtain Call go to the efforts to help the Iowa Central dance team get to Daytona Beach, which is where the team travels for nationals every year.

Also during the evening, the winner of the Katie Lunn Keep the Spirit Alive Memorial Fund scholarship will be announced.

Lunn, the daughter of Julie and Jerry Lunn, of Manson, was killed in a train accident in Chicago, Illinois, on April 16, 2010.

Dencklau said Lunn was a dance instructor and choreographer, as well as an “amazing performer.”

“We really appreciate Katie’s parents for having this fund for the dance team and as a way to keep her spirit alive,” Dencklau said.

The fund provides a $1,500 scholarship to a dance team member. The recipient is selected based on essays from team members describing what dance means to them.

Dencklau said Curtain Call is an important night for all the members of Iowa Central’s dance team.

“These girls have worked very hard throughout this season, including over summer practices, camps, late night rehearsals,” said Dencklau. “Along with them having to balance work, school and their other extracurricular activities, you can tell how committed these girls are to the dance team and to Iowa Central.”

Curtain Call will be held Friday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m. at Decker Auditorium on Iowa Central’s campus.

Tickets cost $1 for Iowa Central students, $3 for non-Iowa Central students and $5 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the Iowa Central bookstore, from a dance team member or at the door.
