FDSHS hosts Open Mic Night

Event to raise funds for school theatre

A night of entertainment has been set up on Saturday to help raise funds for the Fort Dodge Senior High School Theater.

“Open Mic Night” is an event presented by the Fort Dodge Senior High School Speech and Drama Booster Club members.

Anyone can sign up to perform during the night. Organizers are open to all different kinds of talent, but are anticipating singers, dancers, comedians, instrumentalists, and actors.

“We are hoping that a variety of staff and students will sign up to perform, to share their talents, and to have an entertaining evening,” Lindey Krug, FDSH speech coach, said.

This is the first year the Fort Dodge Senior High School has had a Speech and Drama Booster Club and it was started for the purpose of providing support for speech and drama events, as well as a resource for continuing to build the speech and drama club at FDSH, both financially and physically.

The main reason for holding this fundraiser is to help the senior high theater.

“The high school theater is in major disrepair, and it is a lovely space that hasn’t seen much love lately.” Krug said. “The floor, the curtains, the rigging systems, the lighting instruments, and the sound system are all outdated. Not to mention the fact that when we conduct a show, we have to block off entrances in order to run our sound and lighting consoles, so we need to address that issue, as it is a fire hazard concern.”

Open Mic Night will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Gail Niceswanger Theatre: “Little Theater,” at Fort Dodge Senior High, 819 N. 25 St.

Tickets cost $5 each and can be purchased at the door. There will also be baked goods for sale during intermission provided by the booster members They will be taking a freewill offering as well.

Anyone can sign up and is encouraged to do so ahead of time.

“As this is our first attempt at hosting Open Mic Night, we will be asking people to sign up ahead of time,” Krug said, “If this is successful and we make this an annual occurence, we hope to open the scope of our participants up to other FDCSD staff and students, and perhaps even other community members and alumni that support the fine arts in the Fort Dodge area.”
